Robert Ernest Hulbert Jr, known lovingly to family and friends as Bob (Skip), passed away on July 2, 2026, at his home in Conway, South Carolina, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 74 years old. Born on June 12, 1952, in Nevada. But spent his high school years in Los Banos, California. Bob lived a life defined by dedication, service, and an unwavering devotion to his family. Bob dedicated 34 distinguished years to law enforcement, serving as a Lieutenant for the California State Police and a Sergeant for the California Highway Patrol. His career was marked by an exceptional commitment to duty and the safety of the communities he served. He carried the lessons and experiences of those years with him long after retirement, weaving them into the rich tapestry of stories he loved to tell and write. Bob was a gifted storyteller who filled journals and pages with tales drawn from his time on duty, capturing moments of danger, humor, and humanity with a natural writer's eye. He also wrote with great tenderness about his own father, Robert Hulbert Sr, preserving cherished memories and passing them along to future generations. A man who strived to be talented at everything he undertook, Bob was a true well of knowledge. He approached each interest with the same thoroughness and determination that defined his career. He was a skilled woodworker who found peace and purpose in crafting with his hands. He was an avid collector and student of maps, fascinated by geography and the stories that landscapes could tell. He loved fishing, finding in it both solitude and connection to the natural world. The sea was another love that he explored during his younger years, as his first state job was a lifeguard. He enjoyed swimming so much so, that he took up SCUBA diving. He spent many days swimming amongst the fish. On quieter evenings, he could often be found enjoying old black and white movies, appreciating the timeless artistry of a bygone era. Above all else, Bob was a devoted family man. He was a great provider who took immense pride in his children and worked tirelessly to give them every opportunity. His love for his wife, Mary, was the cornerstone of his life, and together they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the steady comfort of his presence. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Robert Hulbert Sr, and his mother, Elaine Hulbert. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Hulbert; his daughters, Andrea Hulbert and Melissa Roberts; his son, Charles Hulbert; and his sister, Michele Hulbert. Along with seven grandchildren. A man of deep and abiding Catholic faith, Bob attended church every Sunday without fail, drawing strength and joy from his relationship with the Lord. His faith was not something he kept apart from daily life but something he carried into every conversation, every story, and every act of love for his family. In this time of grief, his family takes comfort in the promise of Scripture: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3). They rest in the assurance that Bob is now in the presence of his Savior and Heavenly Father. whole and at peace. A celebration of life will be held in California at a later date. Details will be announced to family and friends as arrangements are finalized.
