James W. Ashford – March 17, 1962 – March 1, 2026
James W. Ashford, 63, of Toccoa, Georgia, passed away on March 1, 2026, after a courageous battle with circulatory respiratory disease. Born on March 17, 1962, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Esther Ashford and the late Minnie Ashford-Gordon, James lived a life defined by unwavering strength, deep devotion to family, and a quiet determination that earned the respect of all who knew him. James graduated from Jefferson County High School, where he laid the foundation for a life built on hard work and perseverance. At just eighteen years of age, he married the love of his life, Ruthie Ashford, beginning a partnership that would span more than four decades. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and an open door for anyone who needed it. James and Ruthie eventually settled in Chicago before making their home in Toccoa, Georgia, where they became pillars of their community. A railroad worker for the entirety of his career, James took great pride in his work and in providing for his family. He was a man of remarkable strength, not only in body but in spirit, and he served as the glue that held everything and everyone together. His family knew him as the person who was always there when it mattered most, the steady hand in times of uncertainty, and the voice of reason when order was needed. He was also famously and lovingly known as "late for dinner," a nickname that spoke to the warmth and good humor that surrounded him at every gathering. James was a man of many passions. He was a devoted Chicago Bulls fan, a dedicated golfer, and an avid fisherman who cherished time spent on the water. Above all, he treasured the moments spent with his grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy to his life. James is survived by his beloved wife, Ruthie Ashford of Toccoa, Georgia; his daughters, Angela Ashford and Carolyn Ashford; his sister, Brianna Ashford; his cherished grandchildren, Leo Gatlin, Diamond Gatlin, Mario Gatlin, Savon Ashford, Demarco Ashford, and Myesha Ashford; and a host of extended family members and dear friends who will carry his memory forward. A devout Christian, James was deeply involved in his church, where his faith guided every aspect of his life. He walked humbly with his Lord and lived out his beliefs through service, generosity, and love for his neighbor. His family takes comfort in knowing that he has been called home to eternal rest, reunited with his beloved mother and father, beside whom he will be laid to rest. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Moss-Stovall-Neal Funeral Home, 55 S. Alexander Street, Toccoa, GA 30577. James will be laid to rest at Oconee Memorial Park, 1923 Blue Ridge Boulevard, Seneca, SC 29672, beside his mother and father. In the words of his grandson Leo Gatlin, whose tribute captures the spirit of what James meant to so many: "Thank you for the open door, for hope and trust and so much more. An opportunity so bright, has filled my heart with pure delight. I'll give my best in all I do, with gratitude I think of you. For this new path and chance to grow, my thanks are more than words can show." James W. Ashford leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and faithfulness that will endure for generations. May he rest in the eternal peace of his Savior.
