Iolanthe Dejesus Mason – February 6, 1925 – July 16, 2026
Iolanthe Dejesus Mason, known lovingly to family and friends as "Peany," passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, of natural causes at her home in Greenport, Long Island. She was 101 years old. Born on February 6, 1925, in Greenport, Long Island, Peany was a lifelong resident of the community she cherished. During World War II, she served her country as a welder, contributing to the war effort with the same quiet strength and determination that would define her entire life. She was proud of the work she did during those years, and her family was proud of her. Peany was the kind of person who made everyone feel like they belonged. She had a special gift for caring for her extended family of nieces and nephews, always making sure they felt loved and looked after. Her door was always open, and there was always room at her table. When she wasn't busy tending to family, Peany could be found with a book in her hands, a crossword puzzle on her lap, or a fierce game of Scrabble underway. She was a sharp and curious mind right up until the end, and she never turned down a challenge. A woman of steady faith, Peany found comfort and strength in her Christian beliefs throughout her long and remarkable life. Her family takes solace in knowing she is now at rest in the Lord's care. A funeral service will be held on July 24 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, NY. Family and friends are welcome to gather and celebrate a life beautifully and fully lived.
