Gwen joy matulka – July 11, 1954 – June 17, 2026
Gwen Joy Matulka, 71, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on June 17, 2026, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Though the disease may have dimmed her light in her final years, those who knew Gwen will forever remember a woman who was full of energy, who loved life deeply, and whose smile and laugh could fill any room. Gwen was born on July 11, 1954, in David City, Nebraska, to Adolph and Louise Navrkal. She grew up surrounded by family and carried that devotion with her throughout her entire life. In 1972, she married John Matulka, and together they built a life defined by love, adventure, and togetherness. They celebrated 53 wonderful years of marriage, a testament to the strength of their bond and their commitment to each other. Above all else, Gwen loved and cherished her children. She was a devoted mother, a loving wife, and a fierce protector of her family. Her strength was quiet but unmistakable, and it touched everyone around her. Gwen loved to travel with her family, and she never missed an opportunity to create memories with the people she cared about most. When she wasn't on the road, she could be found crafting, riding motorcycles, caring for her beloved animals, or simply spending time with family and friends. She had a gift for making the ordinary feel special. Gwen is survived by her husband, John Matulka; her son, Andy Matulka; her daughter, Jackie Gaiter; her sisters, Gina Barlean and Gayle Eberly; her brother, Gary Navrkal; and her dear friend, Jennifer Hoffman. She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Louise Navrkal. May she find peace and rest in whatever comes next, free from the burdens of her illness, surrounded by the same light she so generously shared with others during her time here. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 11 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Wick Alumni Center, 1520 R Street, Lincoln, Nebraska 68508. Family and friends are welcome to gather, share stories, and honor the remarkable life Gwen lived. In lieu of flowers, donations or gifts can be sent to 5220 La Salle Street, Lincoln, NE 68516.
